Samoyed FAQs

Typically, a healthy Samoyed an be expected to live 12-15 years.

Samoyeds are medium-sized, sturdy dogs with a luxurious, thick double coat that is white,  giving them a plush, polar-bear-like appearance. The ancient genetics associated with this breed can also provide cream or biscuit-tinted undertones. Their signature "Sammy smile" comes from the upturned corners of their black lips, complemented by dark, almond-shaped eyes, erect triangular ears, and a bushy tail that curls over the back.

· Weight: Males typically weigh 50–65 lbs., while females weigh 35–50 lbs.

· Height: Males stand 21–23.5 inches tall at the shoulder; females reach 19–21 inches.

· Personality: Samoyeds were literally bred to snuggle. Living in the arctic climes of Siberia, inside tents with their nomadic tribal families, they were trained to cuddle children and adults alike,  to keep them from freezing. Also, living in close quarters with humas and  other animals, Samoyeds adapted by developing extremely amiable temperaments.

·  Extremely friendly and social,  they generally love people and other animals, including strangers and children.

· Behavior: They can be vocal (barking is a common trait) and have a moderate prey drive.

No dog is ever completely hypoallergenic. And while Sammys produce very little dander, they could still trigger allergies in sensitive individuals.  Frequent grooming, baths and an air purifier help tremendously, and very often allow even people with allergies to live comfortably with a Samoyed.

Samoyeds are bred as a working breed, and they need 1-2 hours of exercise each day,  as well as mental stimulation.  This helps to keep from being bored, which can lead to barking  and destructive behaviors.  Samoyeds pulled sleds and are used to this day for sledding, ski-joring, and other recreational “pulling” activities. They can also do well in Agility, as Service Animals, and in Herding.

Yes! They shed heavily, and – as a double coated breed – will “blow coat” (very heavily shed the undercoat) one to two times per year. Your cloud will need to be thoroughly brushed multiple times weekly.  We brush our clouds while watching favorite shows or listening to podcasts.
